Alberto Giacometti was born in 1901 in the town of Borgonovo, near Stampa, Switzerland. The son of the Post-Impressionist painter Giovanni Giacometti, the artist started drawing and painting at an early age, executing his first sculptures between 1913 and 1915. In 1922, he travelled to Paris to enrol at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
